I would like to share you with my dream!! Although I have been living in Russia, I have never visited this legendary place – Lake Baikal!
Did you know that the oldest lake in the world is in Russia? Its age is approximately 25-30 million years. This is Lake Baikal. Lake Baikal is the world’s deepest lake with a maximum depth of 1680meters. The water in Lake Baikal comes from mountain glaciers which fill the lake with crystal clear water which is so transparent that individual stones and
various us objects can be seen at a depth of up to 40 m. The water of Lake Baikal is fully saturated with oxygen and there are 23 thousand cubic meters of it within the lake. Each incoming drop of water stays in the lake for many years. One of the reasons why the water is so clear is the presence of tiny crayfish, which collect even the smallest algae and bacteria. Other crustaceans destroy everything that can contaminate the upper layers of Lake Baikal. The lake stores 20% of all fresh water on Earth and homes 1200 species of living creatures, some of which live only in this lake. In winter, the ice thickness on the surface reaches 120 centimeters.
Some geographers say there are about 27 islands on the lake, while others say there are 30. I don’t know how many islands exist on the lake. This is the reason for my trip to Lake Baikal. The largest island is Olkhon with an abundance of nature. There are 336 rivers flowing into Lake Baikal, but there is just one river that drains the lake -the Angara.
I read that the most favorable time to visit Lake Baikal is from the middle of July to the middle of August. During other months, it is colder in the surrounding territory and weather conditions are more extreme.
P.S. I know for certain that if you, like me, would like to visit this lake, you should plan your trip in advance and take into account all details before traveling. And of course try to learn a bit the Russian language. My Russian online lessons are here.
