Just over six months have passed since I visited this delightful city. To date I have visited quite a number of European and Asian capitals. Many of these capitals are wonderful, but after visiting St. Petersburg, I realized that I had never seen a more beautiful city than this one.
It’s not only the cultural capital of Russia, but it’s really a masterpiece. The architecture, culture and atmosphere of the city is something special. May everyone who wanted to visit my country would come to St. Petersburg and feel its atmosphere!
I came to St. Petersburg in August and, from my pint of view, it is the best time to visit this city. Because I’m a southern girl: I do not like cold in my bones or cloudy weather, although the gloomy sky is a normal phenomenon for St. Petersburg all year round. If you want to see the «White Nights», drawbridges, and feel the summer breath of the Northern capital, then the period from the end of May to the middle of July is the ideal time for visiting!
So, what is worth seeing in St. Petersburg?! To this question there is no clear answer, because we are all different and everyone will choose for themselves what he/she desires to see.
If you are an admirer of cultural and historical museums, then go to the Hermitage! In the State Hermitage there are more than three million exhibits – to fully see them all, you will need to walk around for more than one month. Therefore, even if you have just three hours to come around the Hermitage, it would be better to think about the points that you wish to view in advance. The easiest way is by choosing one floor – each floor corresponds to one particular historical period! If all that running around museums and theaters does not inspire you, you can just relax, sitting by the river Neva and looking at the drawbridges!
I preferred to sit in front of St. Isaac’s Cathedral. The cathedral is located in the heart of the city, its dome is one of the largest in the whole world. It takes several hours to visit St. Isaac’s Cathedral, but it will leave an impression for life. This is my favourite cathedral in St. Petersburg. In second place is the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood. I also adore the Summer Garden and Peterhof, but I would never go to the Kunstkamera or the Russian cruiser, Aurora. Actually, these are just my personal preferences: my friends visited those places with great pleasure and were full of emotions!
There are hundreds of other sights and I’m sure that everyone will find their favorite place in this city. Even just walking around the city, you will feel its greatness and beauty!
Writing this article, I will try to answer the question of my students: What is worth visiting in Russia? I declare openly, you MUST visit St. Petersburg, and it would be better to do it in the summer. Keep in mind that during the “White Nights” (from approximately 25.05 to 15.07) prices in hotels are higher than usual. This is the most adorable time for tourists, and hotel owners strive to earn as much money as possible. I did not stay in a hotel, but rented an apartment in the centre (which was two minutes from Iskakievsky Cathedral) in August 2016. I paid $80 per day. I found the apartment using the website www.airbnb.ru!
Concerning nutrition, you do not have to worry. St. Petersburg is not only a cultural but also a business capital, so cheap food you can find in the dining rooms which are located almost on every corner. The average cost of a full meal is about $5-7! It was not my goal to sit in the cafes and restaurants of St. Petersburg, so I spent about $150 dollars over one week and was never starving! If you want to taste Russian cuisine in a special setting, and exclusively made from local products, I would recommend visiting the Cococo restaurant!
